Learning two (or more) languages isn’t hard if they’re both practically the SAME tongue! Due to some very interesting twists and turns in human history, learning Hindi is basically the same as learning Urdu. And if you learn Urdu….[Keep Reading]!
Unlike Spanish and Portuguese, Hindi and Urdu ARE NOT “similar but different” or “similar but distinct.” They ARE LITERALLY and PRACTICALLY the same thing. . . . So what ARE the distinctions, if any? . . .
1. What are the big differences between Hindi & Urdu?
The short answer is, “Very little.” Hindi may be the most reconizable Indian language name to most Westerners (“Hindi” and “Hindu” share a common word origin). However, due to geography and other influences, (the best way I can describe it as of right now) Urdu provides a very clear representation of that part of the Hindi-speaking world that was conquered and influenced by certain outsiders. . . .
Persian, Muslim (Arabic), and Turkish influences can be seen (and heard) in the Urdu version of the Hindi-Urdu (or Hindustani) language. Certain lingo and terms in Urdu are straight up Arabic! So by studying Urdu specifically, one may learn up to FIVE languages at once: Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew (which is similar to Arabic), and Pashto (Persian). . . .
2. Become a “Language Hacker” by learning THIS language alone!
This is why I personally (and strongly) recommend studying Urdu for monolinguals. Within TWO WEEKS you may confidently say you are speaking SEVERAL LANGUAGES SIMULTANEOUSLY. This, my friend, is waht makes you a POLYGLOT. . . .
What is a polyglot, you say? A polyglot is one of those things MOST PEOPLE wished they were. It is one of those kinds or types of very special people that are mostly considered a rarity, and a purely enviable find. Polyglots are people who are not just bi-lingual! They can converse in quit a number of different tongues! . . .
3. Why should I learn Hindi/Urdu?
According to the CIA, Hindi is the THIRD-MOST SPOKEN LANGUAGE in the world! That’s right, if I had to ask you to list the THREE MOST spoken languages, what would you say? If you guessed English would be one of those, you’d be correct. Chinese falls into second place in this ranking. . . .
BUT, according to the CIA, more people are speaking Hindi than Spanish! In my research I have found that Hindi is even spoken in several LatAm (Latin American) locations as a developed yet undersandable dialect called Caribbean Hindustani. Even Spanish-speaking nations are speaking Hindi/Urdu! . . .
4. Why you’re letting your travel team down if you DON’T equip them with this specific language set!
At this point, there shouldn’t be any more reason that I should give you to convince you how important it is to learning Hindi in this modern age. By every measurable metric imaginable, this is quickly becoming one of the THE MOST important languages for members of your traveling team to learn!
If you are, for example, an English-native-speaker, and you are searching for your next language to consider picking up, you may be inclined to pass by Hindi as if it is just some lesser-known tongue shared by a few closeted inhabitants of a nation you’ll probably never visit yourself. HOWEVER, learning THIS LANGUAGE ALONE will gain you access to one of the THREE MOST SPOKEN LANGUAGES IN THE WORLD. . . .
5. The Indo-Euro connection goes back THOUSANDS OF YEARS!
It may come to a surprise to some people that the Indian-European (Indo-Euro) connection goes back thousands of years or even that a connection exists altogether. When you reference your English dictionary, for example, you’ll see ample references to what’s called the Indo-European Language Family.
This language family indicates that an actual trade and cultural interconnection has existed between Europe and India since time immemorable! That is to say that India and Europe have been trading for so long that our languages have become immeshed with one another. . . .
6. Chances are YOU ALREADY KNOW about 30% of spoken Hindi-Urdu!
Learning Hindi/Urdu is especially easier for English native speakers since (by my ear) about a one-forth to one-third of spoken Urdu seems to be English words! Phrases like “Are you O.K.?” and “Do you understand?” seem to pop up frequently amongst modern Urdu speakers! So give it a shot! Challenge yourself! And access the training that will essentially DOWNLOAD two new languages into your mind all at the same time!
